I went with Jenny to see VHS or Beta at the Highline Ballroom last night. I’ve been a fan of VHSOB since discovering them in the Indie/Rock Playlist for November ’07. Big surprise seeing them live was that they are very jammy. Oh, and a lot of their songs sound very similar.
My favorite song of theirs is Can’t Believe a Single Word (thx, Heartache With Hard Word). Here’s some video I took of them playing it last night at the end of their encore:

Can’t Believe A Single Word from bantic on Vimeo.

Also check out this awesome drivelapse video (in HD no less) featuring a VHSOB backing track:

The taping is supposed to take place at 10am EST on Tuesday and last for about 45 minutes. I don’t know yet if that means I’ll actually be on the air at that time or if it will be another day. If anyone has a DVR and wants to record this for me, that would be awesome.

For Rob’s birthday party, we went out in Tribeca and then saw Bedouin Soundclash play the Knitting Factory. I had never heard of them before about a week ago, but I was really impressed by their show. They are reggae-ish, with a little punk in there. Their sound, especially the singer, reminded me a bit of Rancid, except Rancid is punk first with reggae thrown in.
I was able to muscle my way to the front of the stage for the encore and even got to break up a fight between two girls!

Here’s my current favorite Bedouin Soundclash song. It reminds me of the Sublime song D.J.s. Bedouin Soundclash — Waiting For My Ruca. (Via Lil’ Mike.)

Here’s Bedouin Soundclash playing their single, “When the night feels my song”:

I scored a last-minute ticket to see the Magnetic Fields at Town Hall last night. It was a really subdued, acoustic show. There was a lot of conversation among the band members, and the whole thing felt like some sort of music-enhanced fireside chat.
I enjoyed the show, but I wanted them to rock out a lot more. It was so quiet that at one point I heard someone’s cell phone ring during the middle of a song. Drive On, Driver was my favorite song of the night, mostly because it was the one they attacked the hardest.

On Wednesday the “thing” I made was a tattoo. On Saturday I took a picture of my sweet electric guitar. Today I made a hand-held fireball (following along with this youtube video). Friday I “made” Manu Ginobili of the Spurs sign a Knicks t-shirt.

Photo of Ginobili forthcoming, and separate posts for the tattoo and fireball are also on their way.

Yes I realize I’m pushing the envelope of Thing A Day pretty heavily right now.

I’ve always wanted to try Masa, that shrine to sushi perfection, with its $300 prix fixe menu. I didn’t do that last week, but I did get a mini sampler at Bar Masa, which is nonetheless frightfully expensive, though somewhat less so than Masa. I was there showing my Chilean friend Maca around. This is what we had:

I ordered the sushi a la carte — maitake, tuna, octopus, scallop, eel, and 4 others — and after I had done so the waiter indicated across the table to Maca and said, “And for her?” He did a minor double-take when I let him know that yes, we were splitting 8 pieces of sushi. It wasn’t a lot of food, but the bill was still $65.

The quality of the sushi seemed first-rate to me, although it made me realize that I needn’t have reached this far up the quality scale to satisfy my as-yet unsophisticated sushi palate. I could tell the Maitake was cooked perfectly — just this side of crispy, very lightly buttered — and the eel was also easily the best unagi I’ve had, and I have it almost every time I eat sushi so I did actually have a basis for comparison there. My two other pieces were good but not mindblowing. The restaurant itself was beautiful in a minimalist way, although it was missing the small touches I would have expected for something in that price range. For example, the pen I was given to sign the check was a dime-store bic with a chewed end.

All in all I’m very happy that I went, but more for the experience than the actual food. Still, my excitement and anticipation for Masa’s menu hasn’t abated a bit.

I saw The Bourne Ultimatum on Thursday. I had originally torrented it, but after watching the first few minutes on my computer, and after having read an article claiming it’s the best American film trilogy I decided it was best to see this one in the theater.

The Bourne Ultimatum was fun. It’s a very solid movie, moves quickly from action to action without feeling overwhelming. I give it an 8/10. Although it’s quite good, it left me feeling a bit unsatisfied after having seen it. Even though it gets an 8 out of 10, the movie doesn’t really have any extraordinarily good parts. It averages in the 7.5 to 8.5 range the entire length of the movie. Put another way, its standard deviation is rather low. Compare it to my other favorite action movie of this summer, Live Free or Die Hard. LF or DH also gets an 8/10, but the quality varied much more. There were low points in it but also a number of 10s. And it was more satisfying as a result. In movies, as in life, it seems, high points don’t mean as much without low points to give them contrast.

One neat think about the BU was recognizing lots of the New York City locations used in the film. I got a surprise when they revealed that 415 E 71st St was an important address. That’s a block away from where I used to live!

To air is human. To air guitar, divine.

Last night I attended the US Air Guitar Championships with Sander, Kim and Carol. The tournament featured 12 regional champs from around the country. 4th place: Mcnallica. 3rd places (tie): Hot Lixx Hulahan (last year’s champ) and Big Rig. Second place: The Rockness Fucking Monster from LA. This year’s champion: William Ocean, who heard his final scores with blood dripping down his nose. Now that’s awesome.

Ended up with a free ticket to the first-ever Beastie Boys show in Brooklyn. And yes, they definitely played, “No Sleep til Brooklyn” — they called it the borough’s anthem. Really hard to believe that song has never been played live in Brooklyn before.

I took this video with my treo. It has Very Bad Sound. If you squint your eyes and pretend you’re really drunk, you might be able to pick out that they were singing, “No … Sleep … til Brooklyn.”

Pheeder is going to be making a special guest appearance (of sorts) at tonight’s Cell Phone Lock-in at the Moma. I can’t say more because it’s a bit of a secret, but I’ll update with some more details tomorrow.

Update
By “tomorrow” I apparently meant next week. Anyway, this is what went down: Cll Phn Lckn confiscated about 1000 phones and put them up on a large grid in the Moma lobby. We used Pheeder’s voice engine to call the cell phones, which created a really neat effect of twinkling, blinking, buzzing phones for about 20 minutes. The sound system drowned out the phones’ ringtones, unfortunately. It would have made a cool aural pastiche.

We had originally set the call-bomb to go off at 7:30, but at 7:20 there was still a long line of folks trailing out the doors, so we decided we needed to push back the calling. Doug from Happycorp and Sean from the MOMA escorted John and me to MOMA’s back offices and where we fired up an SSH connection to our server, Mission: Impossible style, and pushed back the call time with just a few seconds to spare.

Here is some video from LVHRD and the LVHRD blog post about the event. Les Savy Fav played a “secret” concert that I at least knew about a day ahead of time, and at one point an LSF guy went sliding on his knees past me, coated in sweat, off into the crowd. Combined with the surroundings and the generous free Dewars from the bar, it was a really surreal night.
