Shooting Pool at the Century Club

Alternate title: “Beating Kottke at Pool”
I had the occasion last night to attend Steven Johnson’s book party for The Ghost Map at the Century Club in midtown. The Century Club (no not that century club) is a private club, founded in 1847, for authors and artists, with a magnificent downstairs Gentleman’s Room and an 8-year waiting list. I played pool on an enormous table against Jason. We got off to a rocky start but play improved after we found a second cue in the men’s room (of course!), which discovery led to my realization that there is no women’s bathroom.
I already had a glass of scotch from the bar; If I had only had a cigar it would have been the perfect Gentleman’s Evening Out.
